Grinding of The World's Largest Aspheric Mirror and Lens.

Mirror grinding of aspherical mirror and lens is the process of grinding a brittle material workpiece, such as glass, to an aspherical shape and mirror surface. In the past, lapping with loose abrasive grains was the norm, but NAGASE has made mirror finishing possible even grinding with fixed abrasive grains. This has made it possible to significantly reduce the time required to fabricate large optical mirror and lens. Mirrors machined on NAGASE's ultra-precision grinding machine are used in the Subaru Telescope at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan Hawaii's "Subaru Telescope" and the "Kanata" at the Hiroshima Observatory.
